small courtyard cottage garden design in Surrey
Our small courtyard cottage garden design in Surrey was carefully planned and landscaped in 2022 using a traditional palette of materials. In spring 2023, we introduced a mix of cottage garden planting and homegrown vegetables to bring the space to life.
Arranged on a single level, the garden includes a dedicated patio area—ideal for relaxing with a morning coffee.
Paths and patio are laid with a blend of Cottage Clay Pavers and Tumbled Mint Sandstone, while oak raised vegetable beds crafted from solid oak beams define the growing areas.
A new tongue-and-groove fence provides privacy and a clean backdrop for fragrant climbing plants that completes our cottage garden design.

For this courtyard cottage garden design, we selected materials that reflect timeless countryside charm. These include Cottage Clay Pavers, green oak beams, and Tumbled Mint Sandstone. Natural hazel arches and fruit trees add softness and seasonal interest. The overall design supports sustainable living and self-sufficiency, combining visual appeal with practical growing space.

Tumbled mint sandstone is a light beige paving stone with soft edges and a gently aged finish. Its warm, sandy tones perfectly suit a cottage garden design, blending effortlessly with classic planting schemes. The textured surface adds character while offering a practical, slip-resistant option for garden paths and patios.

Echinacea purpurea
Echinacea purpurea, known as purple coneflower, is a late summer-flowering perennial. It is widely recognised for its striking purple flowers and spiny central cone. Echinacea purpurea is valued for its medicinal properties, which support the immune system and reduce symptoms of colds. It is the perfect plant for a cottage garden design, attracting bees and butterflies with its long-lasting summer colour.

Oregano vulgare
Origanum vulgare, or oregano, is a hardy perennial herb with aromatic leaves and pink-purple flowers, popular in Mediterranean cooking. Native to Europe, it thrives in sunny, well-drained spots and attracts pollinators. Valued for both culinary and traditional medicinal uses, oregano offers a warm, robust flavour and is rich in essential oils with antimicrobial properties.

Honeysuckle Serotina
Honeysuckle ‘Serotina’ (Lonicera periclymenum ‘Serotina’) is a vigorous climber with fragrant deep pink and cream flowers from summer to autumn. Ideal for fences and trellises in sun or partial shade, it attracts bees and moths. Perfect for adding late-season colour and scent to a cottage garden design, followed by decorative red berries.
